Adult
Upperside FW bright golden yellow with black costa and broad black band
on the outer and hinder margins. 2 golden yellow spots in the hinder margin.
HW blackish brown with broad discal golden –yellow bands crossed
by veins. Underside FW as above but outer margin golden – yellow
covered with minute brown scales.
Male
Upperside dark brown. FW with yellow spots in the cell, discal area (
2-3) and submarginal area on the upper half. Underside paler with markings
as above. Wingspan 22-28mm
Abundant in rice fields and in open places in jungles at low elevations,
mostly below 800m. darts in the sunshine with wings half open and often
settles on bushes and low-growing plants.
Larva
Dark green head dirty yellowish white. Body with a subdorsal yellow band,
flanked by a white line, 2 lateral and a marginal white lines covered
with minute white hairs.
Feeds on rice, grasses etc.
Distribution
India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand,
China, Hongkong and Sundaland.
