Adult
Upperside black in male and blackish brown in female. FW with 4 white
spots in the cell, a curved discal white band, a line of transverse narrow
spots and faint subterminal lunules. HW discal band of HW continues as
a broad band at the base, crossed by veins, a post discal band, inwardly
margined by a series of black dots. Underside golden or brownish yellow
with black-bordered white markings. Post discal band in HW with pale blue
inner margin and black spots. Both wings with a prominent terminal narrow
black band. Wingspan 60-70mm.
Most widely distributed member of the genus in peninsular India and in
the Himalayas from simla eastwards, including the hills of northeast.
Found at lower elevations and in open country, near human habitations,
flies close to the ground without ever settling except rarely on damp
patches. With powerful flight, can go up to 2300m in the hills.
Larva
Dark yellowish green. Head dark brown, round with 8 sharp spines and
10 conical tubercles. Segments 3-13 bear three rows of red pedicelled
greenish spines.
Feeds on okra, glochidion lancolarium, g.velutinum etc.
Distribution
India, sri lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan.
