Common Spotted Flat
Celaenorrhinus leucocera ( Kollar ) HESPERIIDAE
Adult
Upperside male dark brown. FW with a white discal band formed of 5 connected
semi – transparent spots and 5 apical spots. HW with faint median
and discal series of non-transparent yellow spots. Female similar to Male
but the discal bands disconnected in the FW. Underside markings as above
but pale with an additional yellowish brown small round spot in the cell.
Antennal shaft plain, white in the male and brown with white club in female.
Wingspan 45-55mm.
A butterfly of shady forests, especially in the lowland evergreen and
mixed deciduous forests, distributed widely in the plains and up to 2800m
in the hills. Seen patrolling during early morning hours. Rests with wings
widely open on the underside of the leaves but rarely basks on the top
of the leaves or at vantage points. Visits flowers often and wet patches
occasionally.
Larva
Dark bluish green with very large head. Body cylindrical with segmental
margins yellowish, a dark dorsal line and a thin, white marginal line.
Feeds on Eranthemum nervosum and E.roseum.
Distribution
India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, China, Thailand and Indonesia.
