Common Banded Peacock
Papilio crino Fabricius PAPILIONIDAE
Adult upperside brownish black, with green scales. Both wings with a
bluish green discal band, pointed towards the apex in the male. A red/crimson
semilunar marking in the apex of HW separates the band between the wings.
HW with a red-ringed black ocellus in the tornus and a green or blue-tipped
tail. Bands broader in male than in female. Underside similar to the upperside
but dull pale greenish brown to blackish brown with clear bands. Wingspan
80-100mm.
A swift flier with wavering flight, occurring in the plains and in the
hills up to 2000 m . distributed in the dry hot parts of India especially
in parts of South India, madhyapradesh, orissa, and west Bengal, wherever
its larval host plant , the satinwood tree is available. Abundant mostly
during south – west monsoon season.
Larva
Limaciform. Anterior segments convexly scutellated, with a pair of short,
fleshy tubercles on anterior and anal segments. feeds on Indian satinwood
tree.
Distribution
India and Sri Lanka.
