PARIPALLY GAJAMELA - SREE BHADRAKAALI TEMPLE THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Venue: Paripally Kodimootil Sree Bhadrakaali Temple, Paripally, 48
km north of Thiruvananthapuram, south Kerala Gajamela is a ritual
procession on the tenth day of the festival (February- March)..
Another unique practice at this temple is that elephants are offered
as Nercha (ritual offering to the deity for prosperity) by the devotees.
Cultural programmes are held during the festival days. The temple
is dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakaali. Paripally Gajamela,is the
mega elephant pageant held as part of the annual festival at the Kodimootil
Sree Bhadrakaali Temple. About a 100 caparisoned elephants are lined
up for the event. (Gajam is another word for elephant in Malayalam
and Mela means fair.)

Nearest railway station: Kollam, about half an hour drive from Paripally.
Nearest airport : Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, about
54 km from Paripally.
