China - Kerala, An elephant that could learn much from a dragon.

Kerala a state that opted for the rule by communists since 1957 and looked at China as a role model ever since, has yet to properly learn how it can gain materially from its “Sinophilia”. This phenomenon can be compared to the trend available throughout India where people respect cows as mothers of humanity, perform pooja for it but don’t feed them well, our cows look pitiful and emaciated when compared to the animals of other countries where cows are considered mere animals. We Indians consider our rivers as goddesses and perform pooja for the well being of our rivers, yet pollute the sacred rivers to the extreme so that they turn out to be cesspools and dumping pits for human and industrial waste. .

Since liberating from clutches of Maoism the changes undergone by that big nation in the north is remarkable. The writer of this article vaguely remembers a comment from a financial expert (whose name cannot be recollected) about 15 years back, that the whole China looks like (or rather is) a construction site and he asserted that a big recession is in the offing for office and housing spaces. Now forty years are over China still remains as a strong magnet which attracts foreign investments in billions. In fact it has turned out to be the factory of the world, its G D P continues to grow in double digits proving the doom-sayers as just doom- sayers. There are still experts who are as vociferous as ever and predict the imminent crumble down of the dragon. The forces of liberalization Deng Xiao Ping has unleashed are proving all critics wrong. .

Here in Kerala people love China as Mao’s own sacred land (and this part of the land is strangely described as god’s own land) and China as sweet, beautiful and coveting. One of our well known poets has described China as sweet, beautiful and enchanting. (madhura manohara mononja China). No doubt the dragon is sweet as its story of progress is sweet. Its leader Deng Xiao Ping has made it so and under present regime China is made sweeter still.

This article is inspired by a recent event, the industrial and commercial bank of China (ICBC) came out with an “initial public offer” for 48.39 billion shares which was successfully over subscribed. Number of investors who took part in the grand gala was 1.5 billion. The amount involved was twice the market cap of Citi group! No doubt China definitely thinks big, whether it is in the scale of production of the manufacturing sector or in the initial public offers! Size matters especially if it is the case of China and this writer humbly wish this only a beginning. There are many more events going to take place that will stun the world. If China overtakes Japan as number two economy it is only a natural event the next big event would be it growing as the number one and that would definitely be a wonderful land mark.

We the people of Kerala think small, not because small is beautiful but small is right and big is wrong! If a big company draws water to make a value added product it is wrong and small firms doing the same is right because they are small!

Indian roads which are filled with hand carts, bicycles, autorikshaws(a three wheeled contraption which is immensely popular on Indian roads), pedestrians and all sorts of animals and birds present many funny scenes, where accidents small medium and big are so frequent. When a bicycle collides with a pedestrian, the onlookers (onlookers contribute a major part of the population of Kerala as unemployment is the only phenomenon that keeps on growing and people are happy to be onlookers and occasional interferers on the street!) –it is certainly is the sign of our street smartness- join the pedestrian’s side and abuse or assault the poor bicycle rider. When a bicycle collides with a motor car the onlookers are with the cycle rider and assault the car driver, with out enquiring whose oversight caused the accident! Because small is right and big is wrong, a motor car is definitely bigger than a bicycle. Even Karl Marx would not have envisaged such a kind of socialism.

The love towards China in the hearts of the people has to be put in to practical use, that has to be used to enlighten them and they have to be inspired by the great strides China has made. The great efforts the amount of sweat they shed, the iron-clad discipline they showed when millions of jobs were lost in the process of restructuring of the system. Trade unions stood for the nation and did not indulge in the cheap populist policies. Political parties wooing the ignorant laborers projecting rights forgetting duties never gain anything either for the labor or for the nation.. Kerala has had enough with the alternative rules by the so called democratic united front and so called communists. A long wait for a Deng who may emerge from within the communist party alone may address the real issue. When will the dawn emerge from the dark cloud that has cast all over this state?

Iam confident that our dear Deng will emerge after five years because it will the next regime and that may also be a cpm(Communist party (Marxist) led one. So far all the governments were sitting idle blaming the previous one for the ills. A repeated rule gives no room for such an excuse! The eyes so far kept shut would have to be opened, cry for reforms will arise, and one may lead the pack of reformers, he will win the battle defeating the obscurantist old generation, and he will be the Malayali Deng- the savior!

Who will ignore the color of the cat as far as it catches mouse. And he will open the windows of Kerala wide to the world without fearing flies! India China Bhai Bhai.(India and China are brothers) Yes may the brother hood prevail for ever, and China is India’s bigger brother, let the younger brother learn from the bigger one for the good of all. Jai Hind (victory to India!)
