Kandiyoor Mahadevar Temple
Kandiyoor Mahadevar Temple is one km west of mavelikkara town, north
side of main road. one of the biggest temples in kerala. This centuries
old temple is unique in archeological features. 10 days festival in
dhanu and Thiruvathira Aarattu.
2 km from Mavelikara town in Alappuzha district main deity is Siva
facing east with three poojasand Thanthram is done by Padinjare Pullam
Vazhy Mana. Round shrine above squar basement. Sub deities are Vishnu,
Parvatheesan,Nagaraja, Gosala Krishnan, Sastha, Sankaran, Sreekandan,
Vadakkumnathan,Annapoomeswary, Ganapathy, Subramanyan, Moola Ganapathy,
Brahma Rakshas. 10 days festival as 'Arattu' in Thiruvathira of month
Dhanu. There are
some stones in connection with this temple. The temple was of Dhanadu
King later captured by Kayamkulam King and Marthanda Varma. When there
was a war between Odanadu and Kayamkulam, Kayamkulam King entered
the temple and closed the door and escaped through the rear door.
There is an Era in the name 'Kandiyoorabdam' from the formation of
the temple. Some stone writings found are of AD 946 old.
