Vaikom Sree Mahadevar Temple
Vaikom Sree Mahadevar Temple, one of the oldest and famous temples
having the biggest elliptical Sree Kovil with a golden flag staff
( Kodimaram) of 64 feet height and largest temple compound. The deity
is considered as Dakshinamoorthy in the morning, Kirathamoorthy in
Mid-day and Uma Maheswaran in the evening. Main festival is Ashtami
in november, ( Vrichikom ) and is celebrated with great pomp. This
day Mahadevar gave darsan to Vyaghrapada Maharshi it is believed.
Masi Ashtami, Sivarathri, Mandalapooja are observed. Once in 12 years
the Vadakkupurthu pattu or Kalamezhuthum Pattum - Dhoolichithra -
Floor painting is conducted. Sahasra Kalasom is a major vazhipadu.
Prathal ( Feast ) is another important one. When the feast is offered,
the devotee have to do pradakshina to the shrine till it is over and
he can have food after getting theertha and prasada from the priest.
This vazhipadu is offered to cure all types of diseases. The mural
paintings in this temple are worth mentioning.
Vaikom Mahadeva temple
This is one of the major temples of India and the most acclaimed Siva
temple in the south. This temple is believed to be the second version
of Kasi.TheVaikom temple is an ideal example for architectural marvel,
a rare blend of Dravidian temple architecture and Bharathiya Vaastu
Sastra.The literal meaning of Sivam is auspicious, Mangal. Siva is
the supreme personality of Godhead-Paramasiva - according to the Hindu
edict. Viratpurusha, the cosmic cause, derived from oum- a blend of
the eternal and infinite sounds A+U+M. To convene the functions of
the universe- Srishti (creation) Sthithi (Preservation) and Samhara
(Annihilation) - this cosmic cause was
divided into three: Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Siva is the liberator
of all souls and penultimate receiver of all sacrifices. Parvati,
the spouse of Lord Siva is the universal mother, the provider of Sakthi
or energy for any action. Siva without Parvati, is, ipso facto, impotant,
it is believed. Hindus, en masse, believe that Siva is Mrityunjaya,
the conqueror of death.
