The University is named after Father of Nation,
Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948). He is remembered internationally forhis
practise of simplicity and principals of non-violence. He emerged
as a national leader during India's freedom fight. He proved with
his life that freedom is only freedom when it is indivisible. It was
the Nobellaureate Tagore,who endowed him the title 'Mahatma', or 'Great
Soul'.
Mahatma Gandhi University, established on 2nd Oct 1983with its HQ
in Kottayam, .which is the first town in India to achieve total literacy.
The University is spread over five districts in central Kerala. The
University Library is the first in Kerala to set up the on-line information
retrieval facility.
